The competition area for Konsthall Tornedalen is placed between the road 99 and a pedestrian trail running along the Torne River. Taking advantage of the height difference, the building which is divided into four compartments, connects these two existing levels, the main entrance facing the street and the café oriented to the lower path and the river. This simple but strong conceptual setting makes an additional access road superfluous and allows for the surrounding natural environment to be kept untouched. The enlargement of the road in front of the building creates a lane for the drop off of bus and car passengers as well as a disabled parking. The vertical stretching of the entrance segment to reach the street level clearly defines the access to Konsthall Tornedalen which otherwise manifests itself mainly through its iconic 5th façade, the articulated shed roof. The structure of the building, which is reminiscent of the traditional land allotment arranged in thin strips connecting the river to the forest in order to secure fishing and hunting rights to the owner, breaks down the large volume into smaller entities which correspond both to the spatial layout as well as to the structural logic of the shed roof. While Konsthall Tornedalen presents itself as rather introverted to the street and the sides, its northern, generously glazed façade opens up its program towards the river.
